Malcolm(2006), 'A Way Back for Sophist 255c12-13'
(Malcolm, J., 'A Way Back for Sophist 255c12-13-', Ancient Philosophy 26 (2006), 275-289)の話ですが、解釈の原則・方針を読んだところで、思わず「ガクっ」となってしまいました。
'I shall follow three interpretative principles:
(IP-I) One should invoke only what is needed to fulfill the purpose of this passage, which is to distinguish Being from Difference and nothing more.
(IP-II) IP-I is to be realized, if possible, without going beyond what is revealed by the surface grammar alone. (For example, in the surface grammar 'larger than' requires a completion, but 'large' does not and at this level is not a relative term.)
(IP-III) The other in PA is to be taken strictly as connoting a relation to something else.' (Malcolm, op.cit, 275, italic Malcolm, 'PA' sc. Pros Allo )
IP-II の例 'larger than' と 'large' のところに、各々 'different from' と 'different' とを代入すれば、
In the surface grammar 'different from' requires a completion, but 'different' does not and at this level is not a relative term.(italic mine)
